South Korea is rapidly moving toward a wallet-free future with the nationwide expansion of the Mobile Resident ID. This government-issued digital ID now works for identity verification at airports, banks, hospitals, convenience stores, and even age-restricted purchases.

The ID card is legally equivalent to a physical ID and secured through biometric authentication. Many Koreans now leave home with only their phone, using the ID alongside mobile transit cards and payments. This shift reflects Korea’s trust in digital infrastructure and its willingness to adopt nationwide systems quickly. For visitors, it offers a preview of how daily life may soon look globally.

The same app supports a Digital Driver’s License too.
