Korea’s Cheapest Little Luxury: Takeout Coffee

Even on a rainy day, inexpensive takeout coffee is one of Korea’s easiest pleasures. Small cafés and budget chains are everywhere—often just steps from a subway station or apartment complex.

Chains such as Mega MGC Coffee, Compose Coffee, and Paik’s Coffee specialize in large drinks at small prices. An iced Americano generally costs around ₩1,500–₩2,000, while an iced latte is usually ₩2,700–₩3,500. Ordering is normally done at a counter or touchscreen kiosk, and drinks are prepared within minutes.

These cafés are designed more for grabbing and going than relaxing for hours. The huge cups also explain why you will see Koreans carrying iced coffee in almost every season—even under an umbrella.

The competition is especially intense in Seoul, which has an estimated 24,000 cafés. South Korea has often been ranked number one in the world for cafés per person, while Seoul has a higher per-capita concentration than famously caffeinated cities such as Seattle and San Francisco. That extraordinary density helps keep prices low: if one shop charges too much, another is usually waiting just a few doors away.
