South Korea’s café culture is getting stricter. Starbucks Korea has issued a new rule asking customers not to bring bulky office gear—like desktops, printers, or desk dividers—into cafés.
Don’t bring your home office to Starbucks
Social media users had noted how some patrons turned cafés into private workspaces under a trend called 카공족 (cagongjok, café-workers). While laptops remain welcome, corporate wants to ensure tables stay available for all, promoting a shared 공간 경험 (space experience) in these beloved social hubs. The policy reflects broader efforts to keep cafés welcoming and communal amidst evolving work and study styles.
On Thursday, Starbucks confirmed it has posted new notices in every branch across the country. The signs ask customers to take their belongings when leaving for long periods and to make room at shared tables so others can sit.
