Flights-JapanKorea-based airlines will dramatically reduce the number of flights to Japan in 2014 as less passengers choose this as their destination. The number of people traveling between Japan and Korea fell 15% in 2013. Part of this was due to the continued concern over the 2011 Fukushima radiation leak. Japan has also been going head to head with Korea for control of the Dokdo islets. The issues related to recognition and compensation for the comfort women of Korea during World War II are still hot today too. More recently, the biggest challenge to Korean tourism came with Abe’s economic policies to weaken the Yen, dramatically reducing the number of Japanese tourists to Korea. Exports are also hurt as Korean products appear less competitive to Japanese products due to the stronger Won and the weaker Yen.
